Ontario School Boards to Work Together on Energy Management

managingenergy.com has been chosen as the foundation for a Utility Consumption Database to be implemented for all Ontario schools.  The database will track and report on utility use for all publicly funded schools in the province:  almost 5,000 facilities.  The service will be delivered to school boards by Aegent Energy Advisors, who will work with Managing Energy Inc. to help school boards conserve and reduce energy costs, which are currently about $460 million per year.

For the first time, school boards will have a simple way to compare their buildings and share best practices with one another.  Utilities across the province will help keep the energy information current so users can track the results of their conservation efforts.

According to Mike Thomas, president of Managing Energy, “The Ministry has shown tremendous foresight with this initiative.  The school boards are encouraged to cut energy costs and reduce carbon emissions, but most boards don’t have the staff or the resources required to achieve their goals.  A centrally-managed online service takes care of the administration and gives them the tools for the job.”

The system will track energy use through automated collection of utility data and will suggest areas for improvement.  Schools that are using less energy will serve as models for others, promoting conservation across the sector.

This initiative comes at a time when it has never been more important for all sectors of government to show commitment to energy reduction.  Among other benefits, school boards will now have a way to create and implement Conservation and Demand Management Plans, as required by the recent Green Energy Act.  Thomas stated, “When it comes to environmental programs, energy conservation is really the best bang for the taxpayer’s buck.  We’re going to see a tremendous reduction in energy use, a huge reduction in carbon emissions, and a very substantial savings for the taxpayers of this province.”
